Interview with The Angel of Death

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
About a month ago I set up a question for my fans as to which character from my award winning series, The Chosen Chronicles, they would like to see interviewed. It didn’t take long to see that the Angel was the one most everyone wanted.

I then opened the floor to my fans so that they could ask the interview questions. Out of those posted on my Facebook Fan Page https://www.facebook.com/KarenDalesAuthor, and here on my blog, 20 questions were picked. Out of those who posted questions, one lucky person will win a Chibi Chosen of the Angel http://karendales.com/chibichosen.html The name of the winner will be revealed at the end of the interview.

So here we go!

For many of you, The Chosen Chronicles, featuring the main character of The Angel, has given you many answers and many questions about the Angel and the story as a whole. Today, I’m interviewing the Angel.

1 - Okay, we were all there when you and Tarian met and fell for each other, and we were around while the Good Father took you away, so I guess I’m curious to know: When, why, and how long were you back in that area? Were there any living relatives or villagers who knew or recognized you, as Gwyn or the Angel, while you fell in love with Tarian’s granddaughter? If so, how did that all go down? – Ressa Empbra Author

The Angel:  I did not realize what my feelings were with Tarian until I was told that Notus and I were leaving. It is hard to let go of the people you care about, but I am grateful for the first lesson. Notus and I never returned to that village. When we returned to that region, the village was no more. We never return to a place while there are those who could remember us still there. Questions about our longevity would be detrimental to our existence.

As to Tarian’s granddaughter, that is a very hard question to answer. We met elsewhere than Geraint’s village, in different circumstances. I don’t think either one of us expected to fall in love with each other as she was promised to another man for political reasons. Needless to say, to the victor goes the spoils and history is that which is written by those who are victorious. It is true with her and our brief time together. One only needs to look in mythology to see who she was and what happened, though my perspective of what occurred is very different to what historians wrote down.

2 - If you were given the choice of being chosen would you have said yes? – Stephanie Buzzell

The Angel:  Yes. Most definitely. Being Chosen opened up my life and illuminated the night so that I could live again.

3 - When you think of yourself, what name do you think of? – Shannon Neprily

The Angel: Jeanie asked me something similar the first night we were truly together. As to what name I think myself to be...I don’t. I am who I am. If people need to apply names to me, then they do. I have been called so many things and so many names, that after all these centuries they are all me and I am all them, good and bad.

4 - If you could go back and change one thing about your past, what would it be? – Danielle Williams

The Angel: There are so many things one can regret over such an extensive lifetime. I’m not immune to such things, but for me, I would have forced Jeanie to stay at Bridget’s while Fernando, Bridget and I confronted Katherine. Had I known what would have befallen her—and I should have known better—I would have tied her up so that she would not have come. Because of that, I am solely to blame as to what happened to Jeanie. It is a regret I will never be free from.

5. - If you had one single wish, what would you wish for? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: To have tied Jeanie to that bed that night so long ago. Had I done so, my life would have been happier because we would be together.

6 - Do you think you are blessed or cursed and why? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: I believe that everyone goes through times where they believe they are living a blessed or cursed life. Being Chosen has definitely been a blessing, but how that has changed me to become the Angel of Death is something I consider a curse. I do not enjoy taking the lives of others. I do it because it is sometimes a necessity, and at other times it is a requirement. Relieving your friends of their lives is extraordinarily difficult, but being able to save someone from being harmed balances it out. We all have a role to play in this world, mine is that of the Angel.

7 - Angel of Death, do you try to remain neutral in the fight between good and evil? Lenore Wolfe

The Angel: I’m going to tell you a bit of truth. You may not like it. You may revile me because of it. There is no ‘good’ or ‘evil.’ It is all a matter of perspective. What one person calls evil, another calls good, and visa versa. I am not here to judge. I have been in the employ of what some may call an evil person, while to him and his followers, he was great. It is what history writes of those deeds and persons, and we all know that history is written by the victors.

I do not try and take sides, but Notus is always there to guide and be a sounding board so that I do not lose my perspective on what I believe to be right and wrong.

When we were in Palestine, with Richard the Lion Heart, I did things that, to many, were horrific, but to my employer, they were grand. Even Notus was drawn into the righteousness of the cause. It was only after I was wounded that perspective returned to him, but was it because of what happened to me, or was it that he regained a new perspective on the war? You would have to ask him.

8 - What do you like about the night? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: Everything. It is quiet, even in this day and age in comparison to a city’s daytime bustle. It contains beauty that most mortals fail to see and it holds mysteries that hide in shadows. There is life in the dark. More than most could ever imagine.

If you’ve ever been to a jungle, you notice the sounds, but at night, the place truly comes alive.

9 - What is your religious belief? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: The woman who raised me taught me one way of living in harmony with the earth and things of the spirit. Notus tried to convince me to follow his religion. I have met individuals of every religion on this planet. One thing that I know is that none of them are more correct than the other. Each is a path leading to the same place, if one is true to their path. I am not a religious person, but I understand and respect things of the spirit.

10 - How do you choose your next victim? Linda Rendell-Hayes

The Angel:  I do not kill if it is not required. Those that I feed from are ones who are down on their luck, street people if you will. Prostitutes, mostly, depending on the circumstances and where I am. If I come upon a criminal in the middle of the act, I will feed off of him. In the times of the Black Death, I did not need to feed on such persons. Too many cried out for a painless death. Notus and I gave it to them. I will only kill if it is absolutely necessary.

11 - What is one word that describes you and why? : ] Minahil Jaay

The Angel: Enigma, because to those around me, close and afar, question what I am, even though I have been accepted as Chosen. Also, because I still question who I am, even after all these centuries.

12 - If you could go back and finish living your life alone in your cave after everything you've been through, would you do it? Shannon Neprily

The Angel: No, I would not. I realized that, despite everything I’ve been through, there are good people in the world who do not judge me by my appearance alone, but by my character as an individual. Notus was always one of those, and it is for him and friends like him that keeps me out of that cave, even though there are many times I wish I could still retreat to it.

13 - If you had the power to change/redo one significant moment ... which would it be and why? Moira Hawthorne Copeland

The Angel: I’ve answered a similar question earlier in this interview, but this question is slightly different. For that, I’ll answer this. That one particular moment would be when I was a child in that grove. Instead of staying to watch Eira, her sister and cousins, I would immediately leave. I believe I possibly would be a different person today if I had left. Regardless, I don’t regret what happened that day because I am who I am now because of it and many other experiences.

14 - What would you idea vacation spot be? And why? Stephanie Buzzell

The Angel: I’ve been around the world many times and seen many things. I have my favourites, home being one, but a place to get away from everything would be somewhere north and in the wilderness. In this modern age there is less and less untouched nature, and it is that which I miss and enjoy when I am out in it.

15 - Are you and Fernando Friends? or just someone you get along when needed be? Sarah Kalaitzidis (Blogspot comment)

The Angel: At first it was a relationship of convenience in our mutual effort to find out who was poisoning the Chosen’s food supply and get back what Katherine took from us. I did not go in expecting to be partnered, but Fernando was persuasive. I also knew that it was better to work together than separately. There was never any love lost between us. I knew he had an agenda that went beyond the obvious, but in the end he proved himself honourable.

Are we friends? As much as we can be. I think if it weren’t for Bridget, we wouldn’t be. I know that I can trust Fernando now, and that counts for a lot.

16 - Do you have any bad habits? If yes, what are they? Minahil Jaay

The Angel: You would have to ask Notus about that. I’m sure I do. Everybody does. As to what they are, ask Notus.

17. What constitutes an innocent person, to you? And what is unforgivable? – Shannon Neprily
The Angel: A child is innocent. Innocence is relative and dependent upon one’s sense of right and wrong. But in general terms, most people are innocent about many things.

As to what is unforgiveable, someone who knowingly, and with full intent, does something to someone/something to cause irrevocable harm to that person/thing. Notice I didn’t say hurt, and I wish to point out that harm is a matter of perspective as well.

18. If you were able to, would want to have children? Minahil Jaay

The Angel:  I don’t know. I’ve never thought about it. Having children is an incredible responsibility. I don’t know if I could do it.

19. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Notus? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: <smiles> Notus can appear to be very simple, but he isn’t. He cares—a lot. Because of that, he feels things very deeply. Sometimes too deeply and this causes him grief. He is a very compassionate man who has great difficulty in dealing the hurts that this world puts on him, me or others he cares about.

20. What do you love most about Jeanie? Rebeeyah E. Miguel Iglesias

The Angel: Her spirit. She is passionate and will fight for who she cares for. It is this inner fire that draws me to her. She doesn’t back down, even when she should. If there is something she wants, she will fight to get it. I think if it hadn’t been for this we wouldn’t have been together. She instigated our relationship, and I’m happy she did.

Birthday Wishings

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
For some strange reason I’ve been having a difficult time with the idea that I’m now a year older. Never before have had I felt anxiety around my birthday. This year has sent me thinking about the reasons.

I’m not going to say how old I am, but suffice it to say, I’m older than most of all my friends, and some of them by more than a decade. It is said that by hanging around with a younger crowd it will keep one young. This is true, but it can also make one feel older. It’s amazing how life experience can age you, especially when you’re more in line with some of your friend’s parents, by age, than your friends.
I think another aspect to my birthday anxiety is that a part of me wishes I have accomplished more by this age. Maybe I’m I’m going through a mid-life crisis. Who knows? I do know that, rationally, I’ve done very well for myself as an author, mother, wife and friend. I guess it’s normal to refect on what could be better and find ways to achieve that.

One major reason, I’ve come to realize, and respect, is that I am at the age my mother was when she started having serious heart problems that resulted in her having a quad-bypass when I was fourteen. Yes, she was young. I know that I’m concerned that history will repeat itself with me despite the fact that I try and live healthily. I guess it’s a matter of wait and see.

I haven’t asked my friends and family for gifts this year, and nor do I expect them. I have enough stuff in my house, though one can never have enough books, ebook or dead tree.:)

There’s only one thing more that I would like for my birthday: To touch more folks with my writing, whether that be through my blog, twitter, facebook and/or my novels, and for those whom I have touched to let me know by emailing me and/or posting reviews of my novels.

If these things were to happen, along with all the great things that have already occurred so far, then I know that this year’s birthday will be the best!

Cheers!

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
The Land of Painted Caves (Earth's Children, #6)The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I fell in love with Jean Auel's Earth's Children series when Clan of the Cave Bear was first released. I loved that book. I loved the second one and even the third. As the four and then the fifth book came out, my love affair was being strained.

It took 30 years for Ms. Auel to produce the 6 books of the series, but frankly, she would have been better to stop at the third, if not the fourth.

I had high hopes for The Land of Painted Caves. They were crashed to the dark abyss of those caves.

Ms. Auel would have been better writing a travel guide to these painted caves she so obviously visited. Her research, etc, was excellent. Unfortunately, in the span of her research for her books she forgot something very important - how to tell a story.

The CONSTANT repetition, the lack of any plot until the very last of the book, the need to skim over pages and pages just to get to a possible point, were only a few of the issues I had with this book.

As an author myself, I feel that a lot of the onus of this book's miserable failings has to land on Ms. Auel's editors. In my opinion, they did not do their job. I do believe that this book could have been better written, in both plot and structure.

I hate to say it, but if you love Earth's Children, then don't read past the Mammoth Hunters, you'll only become more and more dissappointed, especially when you reach the Land of Painted Caves.

The Immortal Vampire.

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen

Over the last couple of years I have had the opportunity to discuss the evolution of Vampire s in literature on panels at many different conventions. This past week I read a blog post about the end of vampires in literature. The author of the blog’s reasoning was because the market was super saturated with vampire novels, television shows and movies. The blog’s author wasn’t wrong, but he wasn’t right either. For the first time vampire are a hot topic where one can go almost anywhere and find the vampire’s influence on society.

Some believe the vampire is on the way out, leaving a vacuum for zombies, fairies and angels to fill. I do not believe that to be the case. Vampires have opened the doors to allow creative minds to write about other supernatural creatures, bringing them into mainstream imagination. Vampires are not leaving mainstream either, but have integrated into it.

Vampires no longer belong to the horror genre.  They have become their own genre with its own sub-genres. The vampire has become more than a putrid animated corpse bent on feeding its insatiable hunger for human blood. Vampires have regained their humanity and all the insanity that comes with being human.

It is this return to humanity that alls authors to explore aspects of the human condition with a creature that was once human. From the romantic to the tragic; from the psychotic to the benevolent; from the irreverent to the spiritual, we see vampires playing the roles that mortals used to play.

What difference does it make to have a vampire, rather than a mortal, play the roles of protagonist or antagonist? Very simply it is the ability to study and hypothesize how certain life experiences over a prolonged period of time would impact someone excessively long lived. In other words, the author can go to the heights or to the depths of those human behaviours. It also allows the author to create a wish fulfillment fantasy of what our society demands: physical beauty (commonly found in the young) and longevity – something that can rarely occur together because of what our current notions of what is beautiful. It also allows for the author to study the descent into darkness one can travel, how one loses their humanity while not being human. In other words, to do so at a safe, imaginary, distance, rather than thinking of the real life human beings who are monsters. The flipside is to bring about redemption for even the worst; how hope can transcend the darkness.

If these sound like any other type of books, you’re not wrong. The vampire can be found in every genre now, from Romance to Horror.

If vampires are found to be every type of protagonist to any type of antagonist, what does this mean for the future of vampires? In some cases we’ll see them as not only “other” but also alien. In others, full integration. Vampires are not going away. They are here to stay, and are finding their way into every genre possible. There is no limit to where the vampire is going. It’s all in the imagination of the author. Since imagination is boundless, the vampire IS immortal.

Cheers!

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
An Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #7)An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I fell in love with the Diana Gabaldon's books when her first books came out years and years ago. I was therefore very thrilled to read this next book in the series. Though the book was fun at points, most of the time it was a tedious read. I constantly wondered when something interesting would occur. When it did, it would be glossed over. Reading "An Echo In The Bone" was like watching a soap opera where no real plot seems to occur, except to see how different characters are dealing with the American Revolution. It's only towards the end of the novel that things get interesting with her characters and a plot seems to develop, but it all stops at the end, leaving so many strings dangling that the dissappointment I felt wasn't a surprise. If Ms. Gabaldon writes another in the series I'll read it, but I won't be in a rush to do so.

How Twilight Changed My Life

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Don’t look so shocked.

Oh, and close your mouth, you’ll catch flies.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I will, firstly, admit that I am not a fan of the series, but I have come to respect the impact it has had on readers and the vampire and paranormal genres.

When my first two Vampire novels, “Changeling” and “Angel of Death,” came out in a limited edition volume in 2009 “Twilight” had already been in the theaters and was heading towards DVD/BlueRay release. My adult Vampire series, “The Chosen Chronicles,” hit the cresting wave of paranormal romance and vampire fiction.

My husband believed it was kismet. My publisher believed it fortuitous.

I was dropped in a quagmire of conflicting thoughts and emotions.

Since I found myself to be placed on Vampire panels with very well known Vampire authors, some of them New York Times Best Selling authors, at different conventions, I discovered how much of an impact “Twilight” had. I was also expected to have an opinion on the matter, too. (Oh, no, I’ve never been on a panel discussion with Ms. Meyer.)

At first, “Twilight” dominated many of these panels. Vampire and paranormal fiction fans would always ask “Are your books like ‘Twilight?’”

When I was first asked this, I was stunned. How was I to compare my books to Ms. Meyer’s? I didn’t know how to answer. I’d hum and haw until they’d become direct.

“Do your Vampires sparkle?”

“No, “ I’d reply.

A smile would appear from the individual, usually accompanied by a positive response.

Spurred on, I’d continue, “My Vampires bite.”

The smile would widen. They’d buy my books.

Initially, I was surprised at the huge love/hate polarization vampire and paranormal fans held for “Twilight.” I’m sorry to say that I fell, for a time, on the hate side of the line.

Time continued, I was a guest at more conventions, speaking to more fans of the genre. It wasn’t until the summer before my book “Shadow of Death” came out that I started experiencing a shift of thought and feeing towards the “Twilight” franchise.

This came about as an increasing number of young women, who grew up on “Twilight,” wanted something more. They wanted something adult they could sink their teeth into. They wanted to read more vampire/paranormal fiction, but geared to the adults they were quickly becoming. Many found my series, “The Chosen Chronicles.”

I’ve never loved the “Twilight” series, and yes, I’ve read all four books, but now I have a healthy respect for it. What J.K. Rowling did with “Harry Potter” by reviving fantasy fiction through the introduction of something new and directed at young minds, Stephanie Meyer’s did for the Vampire and paranormal genres. She created a new fan base, introducing new readers to a revived genre, and allowed Vampire and paranormal authors, such as myself, an opportunity for success. If it weren’t for “Twilight,” many of us would never have been published.

For these reasons “Twilight” changed my life.

Thank you, Ms. Meyer.

Care and Feeding of Authors

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Some of you may have noticed that I fell off the Internet Social media presence early last week. If you didn’t notice, don’t worry, I’m back. What happened was I got slammed with pneumonia. Yep, you read that correctly – pneumonia. Luckily, I was able to get in to see my doctor a.s.a.p and promptly put on antibiotics (Gods, I so love being in a country with national health care.:) Now this did not instantly put an end to my illness, but I had to do something I hadn’t done in YEARS, which was to sleep as much as possible. No writing. No editing. No reading. Just sleep. I don’t think I did any eating either. For the first time in years I was living the life of a cat, albeit a very sick cat.

It also happened only days before I was meant to attend SFContario. I had never had to cancel my attendance at a conference I was a panellist guest at before and I did not want SFContario to be the first, but it came oh so close. Despite the antibiotics and the copious amounts of rest I seriously considered emailing the organizers to say I wouldn’t be able to attend, but I decided to wait and see how I felt on the Friday morning.

Friday morning rose and I tottered upright. I decided I could go. I arrived at the convention with a tired smile on my face. It, unfortunately, did not hide the fatigue that recovering from pneumonia causes. Many of the other authors there were concerned and offered their assistance in helping me make it through SFContario. Never before had I truly felt such community and friendship with the other authors at a convention. It truly solidified in my heart that these wonderful and creative folks, who were there for the same reasons as I, would rally around and be so caring.

I’m used to the corporate dog-eat-dog style of business when dealing with peers. This past weekend was a solidifying experience that in the world of the creative writers this is not the case. I’ve experienced it before through my attendance at many other conventions, making new and wonderful author friends, but this time, it wasn’t about professional niceties, it was about genuine human caring and compassion.

By Sunday I was feeling more of my normal self. Not 100%, but close enough. I believe that the reason for my positive experience and increase of health over the weekend to be the amazing capacity of the other authors’ compassion.

I look forward to the next convention I’ll be at – AdAstra – to see so many of these wonderful folks and be able to reciprocate their generosity and compassion.

Destiny's BloodDestiny's Blood by Marie Bilodeau

Marie Bilodeau's book, Destiny's Blood, is a fantastic adventure that never lets down the pace. This Aurora Award Nominee (2011) is fast paced as we are introduced to Yoma and Layela, twins who have had a sorrid past. It is Layela who wishes to settle down to a nice quiet life as a florist while her sister continues the theive's lifestyle. Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Evolve 2: Vampire Stories of the Future UndeadEvolve 2: Vampire Stories of the Future Undead by Nancy Kilpatrick

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I heard that there was going to be an Evolve 2 I was a happy camper. I waited patiently so that I could pick up my signed copy from Nancy Kilpatrick, the editor of the anthology, at FanExpo2011. It took me a while to get to it, tho I jumped it to the top of my to-be-read pile - I'm a slow reader.

I wasn't a slow reader when I got my hands on it.

I devoured it as quickly as I could!

Each vampire story in this anthology is inventive and highly imaginative, unlike so many other vampire stories I read nowadays. Some were very much on the horror side of the coin. These I LOVED. Some were on the sci-fi end of the coin. Those I found interesting, but raised some questions about the science of certain situations.

Regardless, I loved this anthology and hope that there will be an Evolve 3!

Review for Ricardo Pinto's "The Third God"

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
The Third GodThe Third God by Ricardo Pinto

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

When The Third God came out I had to get it. There was no question. I loved the first two books in the series and looked forward to reading the conclusion to 'The Stone Dance of the Chameleon.' It was a long book, and though I love reading paperback bricks I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in this finale.

I know from the previous novels that Ricardo loves his discriptive narrative, which I really enjoyed in the first two books, but in The Third God it really seemed over the top. There was a monotony as his main character "Carnie" and his ex-lover fight their way back home. Another thing I found a bit jarring was that of "Carnie" himself as he seems to suddenly start thinking like the "Masters" when before he wasn't well adapted to doing so. The leap of his ability to logic in that way was surprising and didn't seem to fit with the "Carnie" I loved in the first two books.

Regardless, I did enjoy the book, but felt that some things could have been better explained and other things could have been less described.

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Vampire Vacation (The V V Inn, #1)Vampire Vacation by C.J. Ellisson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was on a whim that I decided to pick up this book, and the fact that it was on sale at the time. Oh, lets not forget it's got vampires in it, too. I was thrown off guard a bit when I started reading it as it is written in the first person present tense. There are a lot of books written in first person, but all the ones I've read are written in past tense. This was different and it took about a chapter to get my brain into gear.

Writing in the present tense can be difficult, but C.J. Ellisson does a great job of it. The story was tight and interesting, though there are some issues that weren't well edited. Let me explain; her story is about a vampire who runs a resort in Alaska for other vampires. Pretty neat, right? I thought so at first, but then questions started arising about what happens in the summer months when the sun doesn't set. C.J. Ellisson makes mention that her protagonist has been living in 20 years of darkness because of being in Alaska. I had to let this issue go and move on. There were other little discontinuities in the story too.

C.J. Ellisson's protagonist, Dria, is an interesting character I would have liked the author explore more of. The sex scenes were numerous and many of them had me scratching my head with the thought of "how could two people be in that position in that space and then suddenly be doing that?"

The who-dunnit plot I felt was solved way too quickly. I was expecting a surprise, but there wasn't one. Things kept happening to the overly many characters (which sometimes made it difficult to remember who's who)which weren't plot related.

Overall, it was fun read if you choose to suspend your disbelief. Her ideas of vampire society are interesting and I'd love to see that explored further, but there are rough spots there too, but not so rough they can't be smoothed over with further books in the series.

If you love raunchy, sexy vampires and werewolves, then you'll enjoy this.

Where you can find me at Fan Expo

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen

Hi there, folks!

For all of you who are planning on coming to Fan Expo in a couple of weeks. I've found out where you can find ME in the Exhibitor's area.

I'll be at table 217.

It's not in the Artists Alley where you've found me before.

This year I'm with the other author guests in the exhibitors area. Exactly where...very simple (sorta). 217 is on the left side of the building just up from the SPACE exhibit and left of the Teletoon Exhibit.

Here's the link to the floor map/layout of the place:

http://www.fanexpocanada.com/assets/uploads/uplfiles/d657bcc4b384007a54bcfa4366e6d1c3.pdf

I do hope you'll come out and find me there! I'll have both the limited edition of Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen Chronicles (which includes Changeling: Prelude to the Chosen Chronicles) and my newly highly acclaimed novel Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen Chronicles.

I'm also bringing the Chibi Chosen. Yes, I've made more due to the demand.

Hope to see you there!

Cheers!

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Review: The Standing Dead: Book Two of the Stone Dance of the Chameleon  by Ricardo Pinto (5 Stars)

Ricardo Pinto does it again! I’ve read this book before and reading it again proved how much incredible detail of the visual spectacle that sends Carnelian from the luxuriously cruel lands of his people into the barbaric world where the slaves are tithed. It is there that his gentle and caring heart binds him to the Ocher, a tribe that lives in the Earthsky. To save the people he has come to love he must find his way out of the machinations of his former lover, Osidian, who was banished with him.

An excellent installment to The Standing Dead that has left me aching to read what happens in the next book.

Polaris25

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen

Wow. That’s all I can sum up about the FANTASTIC time I had at Polaris25.

My husband and I arrived Friday afternoon to find out that my table was directly in the path of the summer’s blazing sun. What a great place to put a vampire author...right. It was okayish. I wasn’t alone. Many others selling their books and wares were in line to be turned into fried ants beneath the blazing sun through argon infused glass. The only good thing is that we didn’t need sunscreen, but we did need cooling off.

I had the wonderful experience in sharing my table with my friend and fellow author, Violette Malan.  The evening was fun, relaxed and many folks who had bought my first book, the limited edition of Angel of Death (incl. Changeling) came and picked up the newest book in the series – Shadow of Death.

Across from us, in the cooler part of the hall fellow author friends Marie Bilodeau and Erik Buchanan  .

I also had the opportunity to see other author friends Rob St. Martin, Derwin Mak and Eric Choi, albeit briefly.

That evening there was a party for the author guests and I had the surprise of meeting Brandon Sanderson.  We had a lovely time chatting and getting to know each other before the rest of the weekend took us in different directions. We did have the opportunity to chat a bit more before I had to leave on Sunday.

Saturday was the day I now wish I had taken some sort of energy drink so I could have stayed up longer to enjoy the experience more. The morning started off with being on the “Lure of the Vampire” panel along with Violette Malan, Charlaine Harris and Stephanie Bedwell-Grime. After some debate we elected Violette to be our moderator. It was a great panel. One of the best I’ve been on regarding the topic. It was a shame that Kelley Armstrong wasn’t on it too even though she was at Polaris as a guest as well and we had opportunity to reconnect again.

Saturday continued in a blur of awesomeness that didn’t let up even after a delightful dinner with Violette and her husband. I did find out that I missed having drinks with Adam Baldwin, Armin Shimmerman and a few of the other media guests because it was midnight (or thereabouts) and I was dead tired. I had to drive home to get to bed at a somewhat reasonable time.

Sunday was just as wonderful. I got to see Kelley again (she picked up Shadow of Death as she has the limited edition of Angel of Death) and speak to her. I found out she won’t be at FanExpo (I had hoped to see her there again, too) because she’ll be in OZ at the Australian Romance Writer’s Convention. If I had to choose between the two, I’d choose OZ.

I also participated in my last panel for the weekend. Charlaine happened to be on it too. I knew this and because I knew I wouldn’t have time to get her to sign my copy of one of her books I took it with me. She was so sweet to sign it.

Later Charlaine also came by my table and picked both of my books, which was very sweet of her to do. Of course I signed them for her.:) What a supportive and lovely lady.

As the convention wrapped up I was able to bid a final farewell to Charlaine and Brandon before I left with a very happy feeling in my heart.

It was a WONDERFUL convention meeting such amazing authors, reconnecting with others and sharing a table with a brilliant friend.

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Review: "Young Republican Yuppie Princess" by Nicole Chardenet - 4 Stars

I’m not one for humerous fantasy, but I was inspired to read this book. This story takes place in the early 1980’s where 4 university students suddenly find themselves transported to a high fantasy world through a shower stall. The four are friends of very different world perceptions and through their adventures in trying to save their fellow student, Stephanie, from marrying Prince Chip, they all realize their potentials.

The story is told in the first person by Joyce, a Wall Street Tiger wanna-be, and it is her conservative blinders that cause much of the strife throughout the story.

Fun and adventurous, this book keeps the reader going. Sometimes you love Joyce and sometimes you just want to slap her.

Review for Ricardo Pinto's "The Chosen"

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Review: "The Chosen: Book One of The Stone Dance of the Chameleon" by Ricardo Pinto 5 Stars!

This is not the first time I have read this book and it won’t be my last. Ricardo’s debut novel is a masterpiece of prose that transports the reader into a world undreamt of. Each detail is exquisitely painted with the brushes of Ricardo’s fantastic use of language.

Ricardo takes us journey through this exotic land to live along with Carnelian, the young protagonist. Forced to leave the only home he knows to live in the land of his people Carnelian is entangled in a vicious game for the throne that threatens to tear his heart into two. If you love unique and brilliantly written fantasy, you will love this book! I do!

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
I first have to state that I love “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. It is by far one of my favourite books, so when I saw Ms Hambly’s retelling through Ryland Renfield I had to grab it.

Written very much in the style of “Dracula” the feeling that it was the next novel in a series really came to light. I enjoyed it, but, surprisingly, not as much as I had hoped. “Renfield” does give a greater story to Ryland and his madness, but what I missed was hearing his own back story of how he ended up (from his perspective) in Dracula’s clutches. “Renfield” also gives the reader a different ending (or possibly the original ending?) of Ryland Renfield than the up in the air ending that “Dracula” gives.

I’ve read other “filler” stories for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and though this is a new take, I did not find it as original or as engaging as I would have liked, or expected.

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
I wasn't planning on posting today, but after what happened I just had too.

I first thought I should twitter or facebook this as a status, but again, too many words.

My husband has his computer in our living room. The desk it sits on is old and it's the wrong height. It's also a bit of an eyesore for me. For several years we've wanted to replace the desk, but whenever we went looking the desks we saw were either had the wrong dimensions, the wrong set up or just too expensive. We've decided to be patient.

The other factor to his desk and how his computer sits on it is that I can't work on it at all. This means whenever I want to quickly check email, etc, when he's not on it, I have to go into my office. It's no big deal, but hey. I like to spend time with my family.

This has been going on for a long time.

Today, on the way home from picking up our son from school, my husband and I drove. (Thank you rain storm.) On the way there we didn't notice anything. On the way back we saw what appeared to be this brand new computer desk. In fact, it was the one that my husband had/has been wanting for quite some time. It was just sitting there on the curb of a neighbour amidst their other garbage.

We stopped. Hit the hazards. Hubby jumped out of the car to take a look at it.

He couldn't put it into the car, but we were close enough, and it had wheels, that he was able to walk home with it.

Once home we dried it off and looked at it. There was no doubt. It was the desk that went for $200 from Staples and it worked perfectly! My husband has his new desk and my son (who is outgrowing the kids desk we have for his computer in the living room too) is going to get the one my husband didn't like, but will work perfectly for the Bug.

It was yet another clear lesson, and proof, that if one is patient the Universe will provide.

By the way, today's my husband's birthday:)

Ad Astra and Shadow of Death

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
This past weekend I was at Ad Astra http://www.ad-astra.org for their 30th anniversary.
For those of you who don't know what Ad Astra is, it is one of Canada's premier Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror literary convention that takes place in Toronto, Ontario. Because it was the 30th Anniversary there were many, many, past Guests of Honour, such as Ben Bova, Julie Czerneda,Eric Flint, Ed Greenwood, David G. Hartwell, Tanya Huff, Guy Gavriel Kay, Todd McCaffrey, Tamora Pierce, and Peter Watts. Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon made their first Canadian convention appearance too, though I didn’t get a chance to meet them.

There were other wonderful authors there as well such as Stephanie Bedwell-Grime, Marie Bilodeau, Robert Boyczuk, Erik Buchanan, JM Frey, James Alan Gardner, Nancy Kilpatrick, Adrienne Kress, Lesley Livingston, Derwin Mak, Stephen B. Pearl, Douglas Smith, Rob St. Martin, and of course, myself, just to name a few.

It was a fantastic weekend, for me the highlight was the Friday night where I launched my newest book in The Chosen Chronicles – Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen Chronicles. I want to say thank you to the folks of Ad Astra for allowing me to take over the Con Suite to throw the party. It was a wonderful success. Lots of friends and family showed up and many others from the convention did as well. I did two readings from Shadow of Death and the little Chibi Chosen that I made were a complete success. Thanks to everyone who came out to make the launch so wonderful!

The rest of the weekend was great. On Saturday, my friend, Derek, helped out at my table, so I wave a thank you at him. People who couldn’t make it to the launch came by and bought books. I got to moderate a panel on “Writers and Relationships.” The panel went extremely well. It was nice to discuss these sorts of issues, but when we took a poll of the panelists as to relationship experience we found that all of us were part of long term committed relationships with creative folk. It would explain why we tended to agree with each other.:) We did remark that it would have been nice had someone who was an author and who was single on the panel to get their take on things.

I also participated in the large group signing that afternoon. It was fun. I got to sit with Adrienne Kress and Lesley Livingston. The place was packed with authors and artists signing for so many people.

Later that evening I was on the Vampires of the Future panel. By that point I was so punch drunk tired I don’t recall if I made any sense or not. I do remember it was a great panel moderated by Nancy Kilpatrick. After that I went home and crashed.

Sunday, the last day of the convention, was wonderful. Despite everyone being so tired I think many of us would have liked the convention to continue longer. I know I would have.:)

Indy, Self, POD, Vanity Publishing - OH MY!

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen

I was reading a few different blogs about the topics and thought to throw in my 2 cents...

Okay...there's a difference between 'indy,' 'self,' 'POD' and 'vanity' publishing...

"Indy" Publishing - This idea (or term) comes from the music industry where bands or artists who are not signed with a large record label (Sony, WEA, EMI, etc) either go with a 'small' label or a label the band set up themselves. They find a recording studio, graphic artist(s) and cd duplication place and basically do it all themselves, even the marketing and the video production. This holds true with an 'indy' publishing. It is an author who either goes with a small to medium publishing house that's not connected with the big 6, or the author sets up their own publishing house to do their own books (and maybe others as well). This means setting up their own label, getting their own isbn, hiring their own editors and graphic artists. It also means they find their own printer, whether they use POD technology or offset is up to the author/publisher.

"Self" Publishing - This is where the author publishes their books without going under a 'label'. They are doing it all under their own name. The author pays for everything - editing, cover design, etc. As well as the print run. (You can see the confusion between this and 'indy' publishing.)

"POD" - is the TECHNOLOGY of printing one book at a time rather than offset printing. PERIOD. Companies that use this technology but who are PRINTERS with DISTRIBUTION are Lightning Source. Createspace also does this, but they also offer author services that one DOES NOT HAVE TO TAKE TO BE PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY THEM.

“Vanity” Publishing – This is where the author is suckered into paying a company to do all the editing, cover design, marketing, isbn allocation etc,  despite the type of printing (offset or POD) is done. This is usually done in an 'author friendly package' that seems like a deal but ends up being a scam. Some infamous companies  are iUniverse, Trafalgar, Author House, Author Solutions, Writer’s House, etc… These are so called ‘assisted self publishing’ but they are not because you are forced into having your book under their isbn and you have to sign your publishing rights to them. Not only that, they set the price of your book and they give you a royalty. This is the worst type of publishing situation to get into. Period.

One last type is “Assisted Self Publishing” in the real sense. This is where a company helps, for a fee, authors self publish under THE AUTHORS OWN ISBN. They just sell the services of graphic arts, editing, marketing, etc, and they also will help the author connect with a reputable printer and/or POD company for greater distribution. The only monies received are for the services of helping to self publish in the truest sense, such as doing editing on the book, creating the book block, creating the cover, etc. They don’t take a cut of each book sold. The only monies received are for the individual services. Unfortunately I haven’t found a place that is like this in truth.

Pardon this Rant

Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen
Yesterday my son came home from school and he was a little out of sorts. This means he wasn't his usual happy self. In fact, since school restarted after the Christmas break, he hasn't wanted to stay and play after school. Now this may due to to the cold weather, but he's a bundled little Bug and before the holidays he'd want to stay and play. Not now.

Last night I took the Bug to his Tae Kwon Do class. Even there he seemed distracted and afterward he said he wanted to talk to me about something. Okay, I thought. But he didn't get a chance to do so, and when the opportunity to talk came up later he didn't. Luckily he had spoken to my husband while walking home yesterday and this morning my husband told me.

Basically, my son was forced into the position of having to beat up a friend of his because his friend decided that bullying some defenseless kid on behalf of the group of girls terrorizing the schoolyard was a good idea. My son intervened and defended the defenseless kid. Now this gaggle of bullies are girls.

Yep. You heard me right. Girls.

It's been going on since school started and it's the grade one girls from my son's class. Since this bullying started my son and his best friend M have been the defenders, the ones who fight for the little guys/gals. Oh...my son and his friend are in grade one, both are at the top of their class, and both are belted in Tae Kwon Do.

In the beginning, the girls would try and pick on my son and M. They don't any longer because my husband and I don't hold to to the notion of 'not hitting girls'. We hold to the notion that if someone starts a fight with you, you are entitled to finish it, no matter the sex of the assailant.

So the bullies have moved on to easier pickings, using other boys to fight their battles for them, and since many 6 year olds aren't smart enough not to be drawn in to the 'Heathers' of grade one's viciousness, my son and M end up having to fight their friends. Usually this doesn't last long and the friends quickly realize their mistake, but it's still very upsetting to the Bug who is placed in the position. He's not one to walk away when someone is being hurt. He has a very moral core and has a very black and white idea of right and wrong (this I'm trying to gray over.)

So this rant is the fact that despite the Toronto District School Board's No Bullying stance, and there are posters all over the Bug's school about this, the teachers are turning a blind eye to these behaviours believing that girls can't be bullies. This No Bullying policy is a JOKE!

Sorry folks, statistically speaking girls are more apt to engage in bullying behaviour than boys, but the school board doesn't see that. They see pretty little princesses who can do no wrong.

I'm at the point where I'm going to be talking to some of the other parents of the victims of these kids so as to talk with the principal about how they are failing at their 'No Bullying' practices.

Until then I'm going to teach the Bug to continue to stand up against these nasty creatures in pretty clothes and to talk with his friends about how they shouldn't listen and do what these bullies want. If more of the boys were willing to smack down these girls and say no then these girls wouldn't be able to be bullies anymore. And I'll make sure my son will continue to learn how to defend himself and others.

Oh, by the way, the Bug wants to grow up to be a Fireman or Police Man - why? Because they save people from bad situations. I'm a proud mom.
