Despite the near freezing temperatures, despite the howling wind, despite the slanting rain, I still made it down to Roxanne Reads http://www.roxannereads.com for my book signing and reading. Granted, what should have taken me only half an hour to get there took over an hour, but arrive I did.
It was your typical 'dark and stormy night' and that was enough to drive most sane folks into their nice warm homes for the evening. To those that did show up, thank you!
I did sign some books and do a reading for those that did show.
I will be back at Roxanne Reads on Saturday, September 21st from 2pm to 6pm. Hopefully the weather will be more conducive.

It was today, the 13th, that we really were able to play tourist. Our friend drove us downtown to the Mall where we went to one of the Smithsonian buildings...I think it's called the National Air and Space museum. My brain is fuzzy on the topic. It was a great place. Took lots of photos which I'll post on my FB later, probably when I get home to T.O.
We went to take a look at the White House, saw where the snipers are hiding and then we went off to check out the back of the White House. It was then the Bug needed to visit the facillities and there was no one to ask except for the secret service agent standing guard at the road leading into the south side of the grounds. So, my husband went over and asked. I couldn't believe he did it, but the guy was really nice and gave us directions. He was really surprised that we were so thankful when we walked by.
The Bug was relieved and we saw something going on outside the cafe we had stopped at, so outside we went and there before use, Obama and his wife were in a limo followed by a whole bunch of cars and sirins and secret service guys in vans and suvs went on by. Cool.
Tomorrow we're hoping to head back down there to check out the Lincoln memorial and the Washington monument. We're going to head to the Museum of natural history and more governmental office buildings.

It's been a day since I was downtown Toronto participating in Canada's largest literary event - Word On The Street.
Earlier this year I hadn't expected to get a table because I was told that they were all booked up, but in June I received a call asking me if I wanted to participate since someone had cancelled. I was thrilled, to say the least, and I immediately set to work to make sure that my experience there would be great.
I got there an hour before the event was scheduled to begin, and set up at my table in the Writers Block. I was surprised to be next to a Children's author, but you know what? It worked out because we weren't vying for the same clientelle. The organizers for WOTS were smart to keep us paranormal writers far enough away from each other that we did not compete. I also had the pleasure of being across from R.J. Sawyer. He was really nice and was extremely busy throughout the event.
What was surprising is that, as a newly published author, I was almost as busy! By lunch time a run had to be made uptown to get another case of books! Our sales exceeded our expectations.
Now, there were only two downsides to the event. 1) I couldn't go and check out the multiudenous vendors that littered all of Queens Park. and 2) standing most of the day on tarmack.
After doing three days at Polaris and then three days at FanExpo I believed my feet and legs would be quite happy to survive 7 hours. Boy was I wrong! My legs and feet are still killing me! LOL
I want to thank my Marketing Goddess, Irith, for helping me the whole day.
I also want to thank my Web Goddess, Stephanie, and my Tech God, Mike, for coming out and being so incredibly supportive. Thanks for coming out!

More things are on the horizon. I'll be at both the Toronto and Ottawa Small Press Book Fairs too. The new year also promises lots of surprises and more events!
Oh...and don't worry...I'm still writing. Gotta get the next book out soon.:)

Word On The Street- Toronto is in two weekends.
I'm in that between time that occurs when one is geared down from one major event where nearly 60,000 people attended and where one has to gear up for another larger event where hundreds of thousands attend. Yep - Word On The Street is almost here.
I have just found out that the table I'll be at is in the Writer's Block table WB18.
It's a half table because I got in only because someone canceled. All the tables were spoken for as of Feb, but I got in!
We're also doing a Picnic In The Park from about noon to 2pm where folks can come and bring their lunches and hear each other, and myself, read from 'Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen' and 'Changeling: Prelude to the Chosen.' The info for that is HERE
For those of you who are wondering where table WB18 is...here's a somewhat detailed explanation. The Writer's Block is a series of 20 tables (10 on each side) on the North East curvature of Queen's Park. My table, WB18, is the second table on the north facing side if you're coming up from the south.
I'm also hoping that a couple of wonderful volunteers will come forward to help me man the table.

FanExpo 2009 August 28th to 30th
Since my book, ‘Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen,’ came out in July of this year I have been to Polaris and book expos, none of them prepared me for the amazing experience of being at FanExpo, let alone being a special guest there.
The show opened on Friday afternoon to those of deluxe passes at 2pm. I had to race downtown to get there and meet the wonderful people who helped me be so incredibly successful there. The first thing that struck me was how incredibly HUGE the venue was. The South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre is made up of three levels and all of them were used.
My table, in Artist Alley behind Rue Morgue was tucked at the back, but we did not have to worry about traffic. The place was packed the whole weekend.
On Friday, my Marketing Goddess – Irith, and two fans helped out at the table. They were great and we sold a goodly number of books. Even though I write this on Monday, Friday seems so far away that all the events of the weekend are a blurr! One thing I definitely remember is that we went to thank the organizers of Rue Morgue for getting me onto the ‘Vampires in Fact and Fiction’ panel that would happen on the Sunday afternoon. The gentleman was very nice and invited us to an industry only party that night. Of course we went. I didn’t get home until 1:30am. I had been up for 19 hours at that point and I still couldn’t quickly fall asleep because I was so hyped up.
Saturday was the BIG day at FanExpo. I drove down with my husband, who was the official videographer for FanExpo. Even when we showed up at 9:30am the place was PACKED! And I really mean packed. The line ups to buy tickets and register were HUGE and then the lineups to get into main event floor was incredible. If it weren’t for the fact that I had gotten a guest pass and the passes for media and exhibitors it would have been nutz. As it was, having that guest badge got me and whomever was with me, in very quickly, bypassing all the lines.
I do have to admit because I had only about 4 ½ hours of sleep the night before I was functioning on copious amounts of caffeine. With having my husband being media he was able to meet some very influential folks and take lots of great video of the actor guests who where there. He even got to shoot video when Space interviewed Bruce Campbell – lucky man. I’ll tell you, even though they had such wonderful and famous guest s such as Leonard Nimoy, it was Bruce that had hundreds of people stand in line to get his signature.
The thing about FanExpo I didn’t like was that I couldn’t go and stand in line and get autographs too. I did get to be on the other end, having people line up to buy my book and have me autograph them. That was really cool. I could so get into that on a regular basis. I was even told that because of all the people trying to get in that the skybridge to the convention centre had to be closed down and everyone had to stand in line outside. The line was at least a mile long to get in!
After FanExpo on Saturday we were invited to the Horror Writer’s Dinner. I had gone a couple times previously, but this time I was met with warmth and hugs. It was a good feeling and the people there were very positive. I met Nancy Kilpatrick who would also be on the panel with me. I had met her before at Word On The Street 2008 and surprisingly enough she remembered me. She is such a sweet and intelligent person. It was nice to chat with her before the panel.
Dinner was short, my husband and I had to pick up The Bug from my brother-in-law, so we and my Marketing Goddess went home.
Sunday was a great day. The last day of any event is when people really shell out the money for what they want and this was the case that day. It was a shorter day at the Expo. My Marketing Goddess had to go off to have a meeting with folks from Space and from what I understand things went well there. Time flew and before I knew it, it was time for the panel. Monica of Rue Morgue was the moderator for the panel and she’s a wonderful person, very sweet and incredibly helpful. She did a fantastic job moderating. I also got to meet Elizabeth Miller – a scholar on vampires and Dracula. Kelley Armstrong was there too. I had met her the day before – very nice lady. With Nancy and I we were all together for the panel.
The first thing that struck me when we arrived at the room was that there was a line up waiting outside. I nearly panicked! I couldn’t believe it. These people were here to see me and everyone else speak about vampires! We got ourselves settled and then people came in. It was standing room only! WOW! My Marketing Goddess took video of the one hour panel. I can’t wait to see it and share it.
We could have gone well over the hour allotted to us, but we had to leave. I did bring books with me but folks wanted the numbered copies (which there are few left) and so I was followed back to my table by a lot of new made fans.
We sold books until the lights were dimmed to indicate that the show was over. I had a blast. I couldn’t have done it without amazing help.

Five Stars for Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen by Karen Dales
I do not make it a habit to read paranormal books, but this one caught my attention and I decided to take my chances and read it. I am very glad I did! This is an excellent book. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning when a child was born who had white hair and red eyes. Immediately shunned by his mother who sends him away to die, I was pulled into the world Karen Dales magically wove. The prologue explains his childhood and the strange white creatures who haunt him and the way he became Chosen.
Then Book One begins, and I already developed an attachment to the grown child who is called the Angel and his mentor/Chooser Father Paul Notus. I really liked Notus. He is what I consider to be a moral compass, and the Angel longs to belong. However, he is different so he doesn't truly belong among other Chosen who now call themselves vampires. Both the Angel and Father Notus are back in London, and we are introduced to two very memorable characters: Jeanie Stuart and the Noble Fernando de Sagres.
The plot to this book is simple: someone is out to kill the vampires and it is up to the Angel and Fernando to find out who is behind it. (The Angel agrees in order to save Notus who is held captive.) Fernando is the opposite of Notus. While Notus is the moral compass, Fernando is a "do whatever feels right regardless of anyone else" kind of person. He was likable despite his savage nature, and I thoroughly enjoyed him. His comments had me laughing through most of the book. He's actually my favorite character.
Jeanie is the Angel's love interest, and she and Fernando clash, which was great to see. But yes, danger is lurking around the corner for Jeanie. I won't spoil that one though, but Karen has a surprise in store that caught me completely off guard.
The white demons we're introduced to in the prologue continue to haunt the Angel in this book, which I very much enjoyed because it built up the suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat. Who are these demons and will the Angel ever conquer them?
So I recommend this book. This is a mature book, and it's probably that reason that makes it easy to enjoy it as much as I did. It's nice to get involved in a story that has multiple layers and depth to it. It's a book for my keeper shelf now. And don't let the number of pages dissuade you. The book reads fast because Karen never lets it slow down.

Angel of Death is an exhilarating story in which Karen Dales seamlessly blends beautiful descriptive pieces into a fast-paced story. I was never bored or tempted to skim through this book--not once! I believe Angel of Death is destined to be a classic, and would make a wonderful movie production.
And, of course, I want the next book in the series to be published right now!

The questions I have floating in my mind is this:
1) Should I impose on my husband's AMAZING multimedia godlike powers again?
2) How many people would want me to do this, ie. is there really a market.
and
3) I'm heard of some authors reading the book themselves. I think this would be fun, but would it be appropriate for me to be the reader.

I met a lot of wonderful folks at Polaris this year and I want to thank my Marketing Goddess, my Tech/Sales God and my Publicity/Web Goddess for making it the success that it was. I could not have done it with out them. LOVE YOU GUYS!
Today I was let off my leash a couple of times to go and check out the other dealers and do two interviews. One visual and one audio. Once I know when and where they are posted on the 'net I will repost them here and let everyone know about them. That's 4 interviews in two days!
I want to thank the folks of Polaris for doing such an amazing job running the convention. All your folk were friendly and helpful. I'm so going to come back next year. Hopefully you'll have me back as a Guest again.:)
I also got a chance to talk with the folks of Ad Astra2010 and I'm going to be contacting them about being a guest there too. I was even asked to be a guest at a con in Rochester, NY, in November, but I think I may have to pass on that as I'm hoping to be in D.C. for a week in the middle of October. I met fans A Polaris from D.C. and when I told them I would be coming down to their neck of the woods they were thrilled. They're (hopefully) going to help me contact an independent bookstore down there so I can possibly do a book signing/event. Cross fingers.
My Tech/Sales God set a number to be our success number for books sold at Polaris and we went over it. We sold a lot more books today and I have to say a big thank yous to my marketing goddess, my publicity/web goddess and my tech god. You guys rock.
Today I spent my day tethered to my table to talk with fans and sell books. I was only allowed away just to go to the washroom.:) I did bring a box of my numbered special editions and sold few of them. Most of the books were non-numbered.
The highlight of my day is that Claudia Black happily accepted a copy of my book! I'm so thrilled! Claudia Black is going to read my book!
Other awesome highlights: at the vampire panel (I wasn't on it) my book came up in the discussion which sent an interviewer over to my booth. I got a nice 10 minute interview! WHOOT. When it's out on the 'net I'll make sure everyone hears about it.:)
I'm also going to be interviewed again tomorrow by another company.:)
I was also really shocked and honoured that a fan drove 1 1/2 hours to Polaris just to get a copy of my book!
So far it's been a great experience and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Wish me luck!

I'm back from my first night at Polaris23 and I had a great time. I can't wait to head back tomorrow morning for another fun filled day.

You may be wondering what it is that you missed if you could not have attended. It was the Book Launch Party for my newly released novel ‘Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen,’ and it couldn’t have gone any better than it did.
It’s success is not due to my part of the evening, though I do have to say that I may have contributed (being the author of the book), but it would not have gone as well as it did without the amazing help of some wonderful folks.

Evan Dales, my husband and staunch supporter even when things may seem bleak, thank you so very much for being there. Without you we would not have had the commercials and book trailer playing on the big windscreen. Without you we would not have had sound for the reading. Marshall Dane – When Evan told me he met you at the Canadian Musician awards and that you agreed to play for the Book Launch I was really happy. When you came in with your guitar and began to play for us I instantly became a fan. I am very lucky to have had you play at my event and I look forward to the day when I can say “I had Marshall Dane play at my Book Launch and I have the video to prove it.J” You really made the evening. Without you it wouldn’t have been so successful.
We arrived at the Fox and Fiddle on Yonge Street at 4pm to the surprise that some folks were already there, upstairs on the patio! It took time, but we got the whole area settled and set up. When 5pm showed up people began to arrive. More and more folks flowed in and I was grateful that we had the upper patios for our needs.
Many folks headed to the patio for dinner and I eventually was sent up there too. Gotta feed the author so she doesn’t pass out, right?J While I waited for my food to arrive, I had the wonderful opportunity to move from table to table and talk with folks.
After dinner more folks arrived and more mingling was done. It was wonderful to see so many new and supportive faces. Even my parents and in-laws came out. More books were sold and then it was time for Marshall to play his first set. My goodness he is incredible! If you can, you MUST get his CD. What a wonderful performer and he charmed everyone.
Then it was my turn to perform. It was my first public reading of my book and I had tried, without success, to figure out what part of the book I should read. I had asked several folks who have read my book their opinion. Eventually I left it to Irith to request her favourite part. I read the first love scene between the Angel and Jeanie. It went really well.
Then we had the raffles. Three little ‘goth kits’, two bottles of wine and a fencing lesson for four were raffled off. I’m really happy that the person who really wanted the fencing lesson won it. I’ve never seen anyone so excited! I hope you enjoy, Brett!
Marshall played again for us (thank you Irith for convincing him to do another set;) and it was great!
With so much entertainment we went for a break before the bloody cake cutting ceremony.J Marshall was swarmed by lots of lovely ladies buying his CD and lots of folks bought my book. Photos were taken as more folks arrived. Then it was time for the cake to be cut.
I have to admit I’ve never cut a cake with a sword before. I was contemplating using a nice over handed swing, but that would have made a mess. I did it gently. The rest of the evening was filled with sugar filled pixies J and socializing.
Much praise was sung about my book from folks who had already read it, which made me blush or laugh. I think the funniest was that someone got completely turned around and lost on the TTC Subway because she became so engrossed. In every case, I was happy to hear that folks were enjoying it, making those who have not yet read it want to read it.
I’m writing this the day after the party, in a futile attempt to recover, know that this Launch is just the beginning. I have to get the energy going again because in 4 more days I’ll be at Polaris23 as a Notable Guest and from all that I have heard about it, I should expect it to be amazingly busy and loads of fun.

I have two days left before my Book Launch Party and everything is starting to come together. I still have to get the stuff for some of the draws. Every time I think about it my head starts swimming. Before, when we were in the planning stages it all seemed unreal and now that we're only two days away I feel as tho I'm about to be fired into space while clinging desperately to the outside of the rocket.
My Marketing Goddess told me that the roller coaster ride is just about to start...OMFG...somebody strap me it! LOL Because the week after that is Polaris!
I'm just so thrilled that my book is now available on Amazon.com too! That too was part of the ride.:)

Karen Dales in her debut offering has written a poignant and epic tale of life and its constant challenges to both the human body and psyche. She writes of the hardships that our forbearers had to prevail against in those times of hardship, prejudice and superstition.
The boy had never known anything but the love of Auntie, the woman who cared for him and kept him from all human eyes. He only knew he was different than the others he had seen while hiding from anyone who came to the humble shack. The boy’s albino looks kept him from appearing totally human, giving him fae features. The prequel to Angel of Death is the Chronicle of the Changling which introduces us to the boy’s life. Angel’s hand is further forced to take on partners to help him in his search: Fernando, a cocky Portuguese noble who is very brash and the lovely Scottish maid, Jeanie Stuart, who has pined for the Angel to notice her for years.
The trio find themselves traveling to France to search out the conspirators in the poisoning of their food supply and subsequent extinction. While on their quest, they find love, friendship and truths which lead them back to where they started from.
This novel is a brilliant example of good overcoming and prevailing against evil and prejudice. I must say this tale was an emotional ride of literary genius, both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. I will be watching and waiting for Ms. Dales’ next chapter in the life of the Angel.

I have been launching my first novel 'Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen' which includes 'Changeling: Prelude to the Chosen,' and the launch is going VERY WELL!
Yesterday I did my first book fair I did better than I expected! Everyone who came by was impressed that it looked so commercial! What a great complement.:) A box of books moved that day into the hands of readers.
I've also been getting ready for my Book Launch Party on July 5th. Originally we thought we'd get between 50 to 100 people. Now it looks like we'll get about 200! Four local newspapers are sending reporters and we're waiting to hear about from a couple of others. Lots and lots of things are planned for it and I can't believe it's only 3 weeks away!
Then, the next week I'm a Notable Guest for Polaris23! I'm really stoked! Already two of the hotels for it are sold out and they are expecting several thousands of folks to pass through. Never before have I encountered such incredible nit wits as the US Publishers my Canadian Publisher is using for greater distribution. They fully regret ever having gone with them and it has driven me to drink just to calm down a few nights last week. That's something I have NEVER done before and never need to do again!
Now, cross fingers, the US Publishers will be going to print and I'll get my galley next week. They have until June 10th to do their work or the contract will be broken. My publishers are PISSED.
On a good note...Dark Dragon Publications contacted the Canadian Printers and were given the thumbs up. Files were sent and now there is a bet going on within Dark Dragon as to who is going to get us our books first. LOL I'm betting on the Canadian printers....they have the same deadline.
I'm not going to go into all the gory details yet. I haven't been given permission to do so, but if the contract is broken then I'll spill.
As it stands right now my Marketing Goddess has me as a guest for the Canadian Fan Expo I'm really excited about that.
More good news...I have NOW Magazine, Eye Weekly, Snap!, Metro News, and Toronto.com listing my Book Launch Party and sending reporters.:)
We're also going to be having Marshall Dane performing! WOO HOO!
Arrangements are currently in the works for me to have a designer authors wardrobe made by Starkers Corsetry. I'm really excited about that because her clothing is SPECTACULAR!

It's the day before Mother's Day and we've been having some seriously wonky weather.
The reason that I haven't done an update right now is that we're currently in a holding pattern.
I was supposed to get my galley this week, so I'm going to wait until Monday. If I haven't received it by then I'll be calling them as I MUST have the first run in my hands before I do the Toronto Small Press Book Fair on June 13th at the Toronto Resource Library (Yonge and Bloor).
I'm also waiting for WAV studios to finish their magic on the post production of my trailer and two commercials. I've been asked to help figure out what music should be used for them. That's hard! Tho I listen to classical music every day at the office I rarely take note of any of it!
I've seen some of the footage so far and it looks great.
I've also sold my first pre-order! YEA! This was done in person.:)
Those wanting to pre-order will most likely be able to do so before the end of this upcoming week.
On Tuesday I'm meeting with both my Marketing Goddess and my Publicity Goddess/web Goddess to help pull this together.:) Cross fingers that all goes well. If it does then personalized signed numbered limited editions of my book will be available for ordering online!
In regards to the Book Launch Party on the 5th of July, it looks like we may have found at least one musician to play at it. We're hoping to at least have two. More details on this to come as soon as I know more.
I'll try and update a bit more frequently so as to keep you in the loop.

After a lot of headaches, sleepless nights, frustration, to get "Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen" ready to print we finally have a release date: June 8, 2009. I'm so excited about this. We were having a lot of problems with the design department of the American publishers that finally I had to call the senior VP of Production. My head of production for up here left a message on my behalf because of all the f-ups on their part. The Senior VP checked into it and called us back apologizing for the f-ups and offered us a better deal. So for all those headaches, etc, it looks like it worked out in our favour.
Now that we have the date of launch I was able to organize the Book Launch Party. It's going to be on Sunday, July 5th at the Fox and Fiddle (1535 Yonge Street, Toronto). I'm really looking forward to this party! There's still so much more to organize! It was originally on the 19th of July, but I had to move it because my cousin is getting married on the 19th. I'm also looking into finding a musician to play there. So far I have one that may be able to do it, if she's in town. That means I should also look for a second/back up one too. What's really nice about this venue is that they don't mind us using their projection system to show off the commercials for the books.
Three of many commercials are shot and are currently being edited. I'm so excited! I've seen some bits of them, but I can't wait to see the whole thing! My Marketing Goddess has plans for at least three more to shoot. Once they are out I'll post them here and let everyone see them. I think everyone will really like them.:) As for the others, we're hoping to shoot them in May when it warms up. They're booth to be outdoors, but one of them requires that we shoot in the woods. That means warmth and foliage. We don't want to freeze our actress.:)
Last Friday my Marketing Goddess took me to the Toronto Alternative Arts and Fashion Week (FAT). I've never been to a fashion show before and I have to admit it was more than interesting. The first part I'm not sure whether or not they were clothing. Completely sober I kept up the one liners that had my Marketing Goddess laughing. The second part had us oohing and aweing. The clothing was wonderful and I think I'll be contacting one or both of these designers - Starkers! Corsetry and Futurestate. Personally, if I had to choose just one of them, it'd be Starkers. This past weekened we also celebrated my hubby's birthday with a big party on Sunday that left me wasted on Monday. I managed to get through my day job, but after dinner I said I needed to go for a nap. That was at 7pm. I woke up at 9am. Boy did I need that! I feel almost caught up. Luckily I don't work on Tuesdays. This meant I could get some work done for "Angel of Death" until it was time to pick up the Bug from JK.
Then it was off to the mall to have a bite of lunch and see Earth by Disney. It was awesome! Everyone should go and see it. I can't wait for the next one on Earth Day 2010.
Then it was back home and lo and behold I was able to get lots of stuff done for "Angel of Death." 6 things are currently crossed off my to do list for the book! Woo Hoo! Only two left, which requires my publicist Goddess and my designer. Now I can relax a bit and get back to what I really and truly love...writing the next novel in the series 'Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen."
